Like most vegetarians, vegans do not eat fish and animal products. Unlike most vegetarians, they do not take produce or products from animals such as eggs, milk, cheese and honey, and they also steer clear of products and items that have been made from animal hide such as leather bags or shoes, and products that have been tested on animals such as skin care, cosmetics and medications. People often choose to follow the vegan life for the health reasons although some vegans do it for ethical or ecological reasons. However, are vegan lifestyles actually healthy?
With considerable planning, the vegan lifestyle is generally a much healthier lifestyle than an average person’s diet and lifestyle. Countries that have a high fat content in their diets have a considerably increased rate of different cancers, high blood pressure and even heart attacks. A 1996 study by the ADA or American Dietetic Association concluded that vegetarian and vegan diets both considerably reduced the chances of getting various heart diseases, brittle bones, kidney problems, high blood pressure, and most types of cancer including colon and lung cancer.
Constant promotion campaigns by the food industries has led consumers to believe that we can only get the protein we need from animals. But this is far from the truth. We can actually get a large amount of protein from plant-based food such as nuts, legumes and soya products. Whole grain food, fruits and green leafy vegetables also has high protein content. We need to eat different types of protein daily to keep our bodies in balance, and in a vegan lifestyle, there are plenty of choices.
Fruit, vegetables, whole grain and bean food substances usually have very low levels of fat and very low or no cholesterol in them. These kinds of foods are also very high in different nutrients and fiber. Often, people living the vegan lifestyle can easily get all the protein that their body needs from protein natural or fortified foods and drinks like peanuts, broccoli and almond or soya milk. Many beans and vegetables are also high in many vitamins including vitamin B12 which is essential for healthy nerve repair. As a conclusion, a vegan lifestyle is indeed healthy as well as sustainable.
